Piccadilly Line Closures

In this article:

These closures are to support the delivery of the Piccadilly Line Upgrade, including the delivery of the first new train for testing later this year. To complete an upgrade of this scale, on one of London’s deepest Tube lines, a number of short-term, temporary track closures will be required on the following dates:

·        Saturday 27 to Sunday 28 July 2024 – there will be no Piccadilly line services running between Kings Cross St Pancras and Cockfosters

·        Saturday 3 to Sunday 4 August 2024 – there will be no Piccadilly line services running between Kings Cross St Pancras and Cockfosters

·        Saturday 17 August to Sunday 1 September 2024 (16 days) – there will be no services from Wood Green to Cockfosters or between Rayners Lane and Uxbridge, with reduced service expected on other parts of the Piccadilly line due to unavailability of trains, sidings and depots

More weekend part closures will follow later in the year. More information will be published on our dedicated webpage soon tfl.gov.uk/piccadilly-works

The 16-day closure from 17 August is required so we can complete vital track upgrade work, ahead of the arrival of the first new Piccadilly line train into London for testing later this year. We are also using the closure as an opportunity to complete some additional depot and track maintenance to help keep our track in the best condition possible to provide a safe and reliable service for our customers.

Rail replacement buses will run during this closure, serving all stations between Wood Green and Cockfosters although customers travelling to central London may find it quicker to use local bus services to connect to nearby alternative Tube and rail stations. More detailed travel advice for customers travelling from stations between Wood Green and Cockfosters will be published closer to the start of this closure.

We will be contacting regular users of the Piccadilly line with travel advice and information. We will email customers, display posters and play public address announcements at relevant stations, host a dedicated webpage where customers can find the latest travel advice and update our Journey Planner and TfL Go app, with customers encouraged to plan ahead using these real-time travel tools.

We recognise how inconvenient any closures can be and thank customers for their patience while we undertake these vital upgrades.

We’re bringing 94 new trains to the Piccadilly line from 2025 as part of a £2.9bn modernisation programme which will boost journey times, frequencies and reliability while also making the line more accessible and sustainable.

The brand new trains will include: walk-through carriages; air-conditioning – a first on a deep Tube train; wider, all-double doorways to help customers get on and off more easily; enhanced digital display screens for real time customer information; on-train CCTV cameras for additional customer security.

The new trains will increase capacity by around 10 per cent and are also lighter than existing designs which will mean the trains are more energy efficient and provide a smoother ride for passengers.
